During the summers of last year, four elected MPs of Southern India belonging to Telugu Desam Party (TDP)  merged with the BJP parliamentary party in the Rajyasabha.

The silent merger happened in June last year and Rajya Sabha MPs — YS Chowdary, C M Ramesh, T G Venkatesh, all from Andhra Pradesh, and G Mohan Rao who hails from Telangana, merged themselves with the BJP. They later joined the BJP in presence of its then Working President J P Nadda.  The party had 6 members in Rajya Sabha.

The  four TDP MPs  had then said in a resolution that the Legislature Party of TDP in Rajya Sabha met under the Leadership of legislature Party’s leader Y S Chowdary and Legislature Party’s Deputy Leader C M Rajesh. The resolution also said that the four of them have decided to merge with the BJP after getting inspired and encouraged by the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

So can we draw parallels when today there are questions being raised on the merger of 6 MLAs elected on the symbol of BSP in Congress party in Rajasthan.

While in the former case 4 out of 6 MPs merged with BJP, in the latter all the 6 MLAs have merged into Congress party.

Legally the matter is in the court of law and should not be commented upon, we will also not delve into the nitty gritty of anti defection law or other provisions of the law regarding this. But our question is about morality and precedent. Why on earth a merger with the BJP is sacrosanct and an act of inspiration and why aspersions are casted when MLAs merge themselves in Congress party ?
