Protest against the refusal of Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra to convene the assembly session has grown and has assumed national stage.

Congress party has organized the nation-wide protest program and staged protests at Rajbhawans across the country on Monday.

In Rajasthan however, the protests were not carried out at the Rajbhawan, instead Congress party staged a sit-in at the hotel where Congress MLAs are staying.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has spoken with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has informed him about the behavior of Governor Kalraj Mishra.

There is a growing voice against Mishra refusing to call the session. Notably, constitutional expert PD Acharya has written in an article, in which it is said that this is the first time in 70 years when the Governor has refused to call the assembly session,

Former law ministers Salman Khurshid, Ashwani Kumar and Kapil Sibal have also written a letter addressed to the Governor of Rajasthan, Kalraj Mishra, making it clear that law requires the Governor to call an Assembly session.

The letter refers to the recent political crisis in the state, leading to the delay in convening the session of Vidhan Sabha as decided by the Council of Ministers. It has been stated that the situation has resulted in “an avoidable constitutional impasse.”

Rajasthan CLP too has sent a memorandum to the President of the country on this matter.

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram also addressed a press conference in this regard and said that “we sincerely hope Rajasthan Governor will obey the law. He must remember that he has no other masters except the Constitution and law. He must immediately grant the request of the Council of Ministers & summon a session of Legislative Assembly.”

Meanwhile a press note issued by the Rajbhawan added more confusion in this matter and it failed to clear if it had given the permission of convening the house with some riders or was once again seeking answers from the government.
