Now that the people, media and rest of the country have woken up about the reality of the much touted ‘dry state’ Gujarat Model after the death toll due to the consumption of spurious liquor in Gujarat’s Botad district has gone up to 21, it is time to remember how correct was Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot who pointed about widespread consumption of liquor in Gujarat.
Gehlot in 2019 had exposed this very model of Gujarat and had claimed that liquor was consumed widely in the state. Though the BJP leaders of Gujarat had then criticized Gehlot over his statement, now the reality is for everyone to see. Liquor ban was just a facade and alcohol was widely consumed by the people is now being watched as the toll of the killed people is being mentioned in headlines.
Had Gujarat’s BJP government accepted Gehlot’s theory and had not ignored the reality of the dry state, so many lives could have been saved which now perished due to consumption of hooch.
While Gujarat and the rest of the country comes to terms with the reality of this dry state, we should be thankful to Gehlot who minced no words in highlighting the reality of Gujarat model before the country before anyone else.
