Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot rolled out a scheme to provide 100-day urban guarantee employment scheme making Rajasthan perhaps the first state in the country to offer such guarantee.
Close on the heels of MNREGA, Gehlot’s scheme Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee scheme is a solace, a relief for people looking to either hyphenate to raise their income level or are looking for means for livelihood. The scheme will tackle the issue of unemployment and will also act as a model for other states and for the Union government which must ponder over launching a similar scheme to stem the rocketing problem of unemployment across the country.
Credit must be given to Gehlot who has an inextricable relationship with social security schemes for launching this scheme in such hard times. The scheme is expected to provide means of earning daily bread with regular employment of 100 days. This scheme has all the requisites to become an edifice of Gehlot’s governance model.
Everybody is aware though many do not want to admit it openly, that price rise has been like a whip on the back of poor people, middle class and every other section of society. While the BJP supporters and part of the media doesn’t want to talk about this pressing issue, the reality is that many poor people are failing to make ends meet. This scheme is like a ray of hope for such people.
