It is rather surprising that during the current Coronavirus crisis, it is the Congress party which is making the headlines instead of the union government. Congress it seems is driving the agenda for the country to fight the pandemic and for the revival of economy.

On Tuesday, the interaction between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Nobel Laureate Prof. Abhijit Banerjee, the second in the series showed that the party had taken the initiative of engaging renowned economists to help shape a plan for economic revival of the country in the aftermath of outbreak of Coronavirus.

Banerjee while talking to Gandhi said that India should put in a large enough stimulus package to revive demand, asserting that putting cash in the hands of people would be the best way to boost the economy post lockdown.

He also said it was important for India to announce a large enough stimulus package to deal with the crisis on the lines of what the US, Japan and the Europe are doing.

Banerjee suggested that the government should hand out temporary ration cards to people to deal with the problem of food distribution.

Few days back, a similar kind of dialogue was organized between Gandhi and former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan during which Rajan gave his suggestions on fighting COVID-19 and its economic impact.

Congress party is engaging and interacting with economists, giving suggestions and advice to the union government regarding strengthening MSMEs, providing relief to migrant workers and reducing the pain of people affected by lockdown. Congress is working as a responsible opposition party in giving constructive and positive suggestions to the government.
